Afsluitdijk |
Afsluitdijk 75 years old
On May 28th, 13h02, it is exactly 75 years since the last gap in the Afsluitdijk (our huge dyke in the North) was closed. The dyke was meant to protect the coast behind against floods and to give way to new land: polders. Nowadays the Afsluitdijk separates the IJsselmeer from the Waddenzee and connects the provinces Noord-Holland and Friesland.

The lake south of the dyke used to be an open see, called the Zuiderzee. At the end of the 19 th Century a special committee started a research on possibilities for closing this sea. One of the members of this committee was mister Cornelis Lely, who later became Minister of Waterworks (The town Lelystad is named after him).

In 1916 a great storm damaged the coasts around the Zuiderzee and Mr Lely proposed to build a huge dyke.
Parliament agreed on this and the enormous project was started.
In 1932 it was completed, the dyke was closed and Zuiderzee became IJsselmeer. This lake now is an important resource for fresh drinking water, recreation and nature. |

Ever since we announced our new Skype lessons, people from all over the world have registered, and many of them have already started their Skype Course with us.

We have students from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia. Their number is still growing. People learn Dutch for all kinds of reasons.
We offer our Skype lessons tailor-made. For instance, it seems that they are an excellent way to prepare for the immigration exam (the civic integration examination abroad) or to overcome any fear of speaking Dutch.

In the European Union alone more than 23 language are spoken. That is why the Dutch publisher Prisma is producing a wide range of different Dutch dictionaries.

One of their series is called Prisma miniwoordenboek (mini dictionary). They are small, light and easy to use. You will find two sections in each book: Dutch - foreign language / foreign language - Dutch. We have recently added them to our collection in the online bookshop.

Summer Course in July
Most schools will close in July, but Say it in Dutch keeps her doors opened ! We offer a short Summer Conversation Course from 2 – 12 July in Groningen. Eight face-to-face lessons (in small groups) in two weeks will bring you at A1 level for understanding and speaking Dutch.
