January 25: National Poetry Day
Every year we enjoy the Dutch National Day of Poetry in the city of Groningen, on the last Thursday of each January.
On the National Day of Poetry poetry-related events are taking place throughout the Netherlands.
The First Poetry Day took place on January 27th, 2000 and was based upon the successful National Poetry Day in England.

| |
In Groningen these activities form a 24 hour, non stop poetry festival, taking place in cafes, schools, the university, bookshops and libraries and on the local radio station.

Wie een omelet wil bakken
moet een ei breken
Dick Kornet |
Gedichtendag 2007
Poetry and Silence. In busy and noisy times where everybody lives in the fast lane, Poetry International focuses on stillness and concentration. On silence inseparably connected to the poem. Silence needed to appreciate sound and meaning. Silence in the white spaces between the lines. Unavoidable silence if the meaning of the poem is wordless. |

Two Dutch Poems
|
Het liefst - by Geert De Kockere (Belgium, 1962)
(listen)
Het liefst
lees ik jou als een boek.
Blad voor blad.
Soms spannend,
soms ruw,
soms onbeschrijflijk mooi.
En het allermooiste is
dat je het helemaal niet
erg vindt
als ik per ongeluk
een ezelsoortje aan je maak.

Bandrecorder, eenvoudig - by Remco Campert (Netherlands, 1929)
(listen)
Je hoeft niet te praten
ook geknisper van kranten komt duidelijk over
of als je slikt keelschraapt
een schoen uitschopt
het suizen van het gas
de tik van het licht uit
de telefoon buiten de auto’s
mijn korte adem
maar als je toch iets zegt
zeg dan liever iets aardigs
iets dat ik nog eens kan draaien
als je weg bent

Remco Campert
Remco Campert joined the young surrealist poets of the 1950's and became one of the Netherlands’ best known poets and prose writers. A melancholy, laconic tone pervades much of his work. He won the Netherlands’ most prestigious for literature, the P.C. Hooft Prize, in 1979. |
