Beatrix

Birthday

Our queen Beatrix, was born on January 31st, 1938. She is our queen now for 25 years. In The Netherlands we celebrate her birthday on a different day. It is called Koninginnedag and it is celebrated every year on April 30th. This is the date of Queen Juliana's birthday, our former queen and the mother of Beatrix. April surely has better weather conditions for parades and barbeque than January!

Groningen

Noorderslag

20 years ago, Noorderslag started out as a single night festival in De Oosterpoort with the best and most promising Dutch acts.

Nine years ago, EuroSonic was added to the festival, giving birth to Noorderslag Weekend. The weekend has now become a three day festival, and with over 180 bands and acts it is Europe’s most important showcase and network event.

Noorderslag Weekend 2006, taking place on Thursday 12, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 January, consists of EuroSonic (Europe’s Prime New Talent Event), Noorderslag Festival and Noorderslag Seminar. During EuroSonic (12 and 13 January) around 135 European bands will play on 20 stages. On Noorderslag Festival (14 January) over 45 bands and acts will play the eight stages of De Oosterpoort. And during the whole three days of the Noorderslag Weekend, the Noorderslag Seminar will host a large delegation of the European music industry. Eurosonic's special focus is on German bands this year.

Language

Resolution

In 2005 "learn a new language" ranked fourth on CareerBuilder.com's top ten list of most prevalent resolutions (CNN.com, "10 New Year's Career Resolutions," Jan. 5, 2005). How about this year?

"Language learning is a popular New Year's resolution because it opens the door to meeting so many other goals in your life," says Dr. Caroline Clauss- Ehlers, a bilingual counselling psychologist and assistant professor at the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. "Whether you want to learn a new language to enjoy international travel, advance your career to an exciting new level, or enrich your life through self-improvement, language learning can be one of the easier goals to attain -- especially if you can see incremental progress and gain the confidence to keep going."

Digidutch a success already

I am very happy to say that Digidutch, my brand new Dutch conversation course by email is becoming a success already! Many people from all over the world have requested the free trial. They have given me some very useful feedback on it, too!

The regional newspaper wrote an article about Digidutch on December 28th and then Dutch people began to call me too! They wanted to offer the course to their friend or girlfriend abroad as a gift. Isn't that nice ? And it can be done too!

New features

These days I am working hard on Six-pack number 2, to be released at the end of January. Another six lessons by email to follow six-pack 1, with even more features in them.
I have discovered that Digidutch students often prefer sending their homework to me personally by email instead of becoming a member of the discussion group. That's perfectly all right with me. They will have my personal feedback anyway. The only thing is that the group isn't as big as would be expected, that's all.

I am now investigating the possibilities of using Skype for contacting digidutch subscribers all over the world. Skype is a piece of software that will let you make easy phone calls with people all over the world. It works on your pc and it is free!

With Skype you can make free calls over the Internet. Did you know that?

Live contact is very important for learning to speak proper Dutch. I can give you feedback instantly on the phone.
It is even better than a discussion group – we can have a live chat in Dutch together on the phone. How about that?
